CR52: JIM EDWARDS LAKE CONSERVATION RESERVE


DESCRIPTION:

The Jim Edwards Lake Conservation Reserve abuts Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park on the south side of the park and is within the Lady Evelyn River watershed. The values and uses include the headwaters for the Lady Evelyn River watershed, a cold water fishery, old growth white pine stands, and scenic physical features including cliffs and talus slopes. The reserve also contains a network of canoe routes, three natural heritage trails, two natural heritage sites, and an unorganized snowmobile trail on the Liskeard Lumber Road.

Jim Edwards Lake was regulated as a conservation reserve on April 6, 2001.

The Jim Edwards Lake Conservation Reserve also contains lake(s) designated for lake trout management. For a current list of designated lakes associated with this area, refer to the Inland Ontario Lakes Designated for Lake Trout Management (2006) accessible in the Source of Direction portion of this policy report.


LAND USE INTENT:

The intent of the Jim Edwards Lake Conservation Reserve is to protect park-related values of the wilderness park by maintaining the ecosystem integrity of the Lady Evelyn River watershed, to restore the Lake Trout population in Jim Edwards Lake, and to contribute to the core protected area while encouraging remote, non-motorized backcountry recreation in an area with no resource extraction activities. Concerns include the need for natural processes to occur in the area, the acid-stressed lake trout populations in Jim Edwards Lake, the continued use of Liskeard Lumber Road, and the use of ATVs within the reserve.

The management area objectives are to allow natural processes to occur, to restore the Lake Trout population in Jim Edwards Lake, and to prohibit the construction of new roads. As determined through the park planning process, the construction of new roads will be prohibited and existing roads will be allowed to naturally rehabilitate.


MANAGEMENT DIRECTION:

Those uses and management activities not listed in the following tables are governed by existing conservation reserve policy, the Temagami Land Use Plan (1997), and the Temagami Integrated Planning Resource Management Plan for Conservation Reserves (2007).

Any new uses and commercial activities associated with conservation reserves will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be required to pass a test of compatibility to be acceptable. Compatibility is normally determined through a planning process.

The following tables aim to present current information. However, with the passage of new legislation, updates to provincial policy, and the development of protected areas management direction documents, certain content elements may be out-of-date.

Land and Resource Management Activities
