E1080r: Nagagamisis Lake


DESCRIPTION:

These portions of land, north and south of Nagagamisis Lake Provincial Park have been designated as an enhanced management area and will provide increased recreational opportunities.

This area is located within the Nagagamisis Central Plateau Complex Signature Site, one of 9 such areas featured in the Ontario’s Living Legacy Land Use Strategy (1999). Signature Sites are identified for their range of natural and recreational values and their potential to contribute to future recreation and tourism.

This area contains lake(s) designated for lake trout management. For a current list of designated lakes associated with this area, refer to the Lake Trout Lake Search Index accessible via the ‘Source of Direction’ portion of this policy report.

Part of this area is subject to the Range Management Policy in Support of Woodland Caribou Conservation and Recovery (2014). The Range Management Policy is accessible via the “Source of Direction.””


LAND USE INTENT:

This area will be managed to provide increased recreational opportunities while permitting resource production such as timber and aggregate. The intent for this area is to implement a multiple use management system to protect and maintain these recreational values. Forest management and operating plans will contain guidelines to protect significant recreational values, historical or archaeological sites and fish or wildlife habitats.

Management of this area is also governed by the general policies contained in the Land Use Strategy (1999) and the Hearst District Land Use Guidelines (1983).


MANAGEMENT DIRECTION:

Recreation enhanced management areas have been applied to areas with high recreational use of significant recreation values for activities such as angling, hunting, motorized and pedestrian trail use, and canoeing. The enhanced management area can be used for a wide range of recreation values and management intents, ranging from areas where relatively substantial recreation development is permitted, to areas providing low-density, high-quality recreation in a natural setting.

Where the recreation enhanced management area has been identified to protect remote recreation values, all activities need to be carried out in such a way as to maintain or enhance the remote recreation qualities.

Extraction operations will be restricted within 120 metres of the lakes in this area.

Commercial Fur Harvesting Yes Trapping will be encouraged to expand to quota levels.
Commercial Hydro Development Yes Where the Recreation EMA has been identified to protect remote recreation values, industrial activities and the related construction and use of new roads, need to be carried out in such a way as to maintain or enhance the remote recreation qualities.
Commercial Power Generation Development Yes Where the Recreation EMA has been identified to protect remote recreation values, industrial activities and the related construction and use of new roads, need to be carried out in such a way as to maintain or enhance the remote recreation qualities.
Commercial Timber Harvest Yes Where the Recreation Enhanced Management Area has been identified to protect remote recreation values, industrial activities and the related construction and use of new roads, need to be carried out in such a way as to maintain or enhance the remote recreation qualities.

Modified management techniques will be practiced within 120 metres of lakes to protect identified values.
Mineral Exploration and Development Yes Where the Recreation Enhanced Management Area has been identified to protect remote recreation values, industrial activities and the related construction and use of new roads, need to be carried out in such a way as to maintain or enhance the remote recreation qualities.

Increased mineral exploration will be encouraged. On unpatented mining claims, MNR may reserve to the Crown, the surface rights not exceeding 120 metres in width from the high water mark of lakes. This does not preclude the exercise of mineral exploration rights, but is intended to minimize disturbances in shoreline areas.

Wild Rice Harvesting No No harvestable stands exist in this area.

Recreation Activities and Facilities
Activity Permitted Guidelines
Crown Land Recreation Yes This area will continue to provide opportunities for extensive recreation activities such as hunting, fishing, camping and canoeing. No public facilities such as access points or campgrounds, are presently proposed for this area, but may be permitted.
Hunting Yes Hunting is permitted in accordance with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and regulations. For more information, visit https://www.ontario.ca/hunting. Some municipalities have by-laws that apply to hunting including restricting the discharge of firearms. Check with the local municipal office for details.
Road Use (public), Existing Yes Where the Recreation Enhanced Management Area has been identified to protect remote recreation values, policies for the use of new roads should maintain or enhance the remote recreation qualities.

Roads will be managed in accordance with the Access Roads Policy.

Sport Fishing Yes Recreational fishing is permitted in accordance with the Ontario Fishery Regulations. For more information, visit https://www.ontario.ca/fishing and review the Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary or Fish ON-Line to determine the seasons, catch limits and other restrictions that apply in this area including the location of fish sanctuaries.
