Policy Report
G2055:
Agnew Lake
ID: G2055
Area Name: Agnew Lake
Designation: General Use Area
District(s):
Sudbury
Area (hectares): 780
Date Policy Report Last Updated: January 31, 2006
This area only includes that portion of Agnew Lake in Hyman Township within the Sudbury District.
Existing uses in the area include hunting, fishing, boating, cottaging and hydro-electric power production. INCO Limited operates the Big Eddy and High Falls generation stations north of Turbine. These plants provide supplementary hydro-electric power to meet industry needs and to augment local hydro-electric power supplies when surpluses are available. As a consequence, the potential for resource management problems and land use conflicts is fairly high. For example, road location, construction and maintenance responsibilities are often split between municipalities, private property owners, private contractors and the Crown. These recreation and hydro-electric power production activities continue to dominate land uses.
The need to provide sufficient water resources for energy production at the existing dam sites will continue to be a Ministry management objective. To foster successful management, MNR will follow management guidelines for access roads and AOC and will bring concerned parties together in an attempt to resolve site specific conflicts.
Management of this area is also governed by the general policies contained in Sudbury District Land Use Guidelines (1983).
